Summer Banking Institute

What is the Summer Banking Institute?
The Ohio Bankers League, through the Ohio Bankers Foundation1, partnered with Central State University four years ago on an innovative program called the Summer Banking Institute. The goal of SBI is to proactively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the banking industry. SBI is an immersive banking program designed to encourage diversity and promote a broad base of talent in the Ohio banking industry while deepening understanding, familiarity, and trust in the industry. Over the last four years the program has seen exponential growth in southwest Ohio where it began and OBL would like to expand the program statewide.

The OBL is seeking investment and partnership from member banks to expand this program statewide and to help improve DEI in the banking industry. Please contact Evan Kleymeyer if your institution is interested!

SBI Structure

  • Four weeks of classroom instruction at Central State University taught by CSU professors and bankers covering topics like mortgage processing, retail banking, customer service, data management, monetary policy and bank operations.
  • The classroom experience is followed by eight weeks of hands-on professional development during a paid internship at an OBL member bank or thrift.

SBI Summary

  • SBI is an effective public-private partnership between Central State University and the OBL.
  • There is a vision for expanding the program to expose minority students to the great career opportunities available in the banking industry.
  • Statewide coordination and an investment in the form of a state appropriation can make that vision a reality at a time when the need is great for both students and banks alike.
