Last week, a cohort of 26 emerging professionals participated in the highly touted Summer Banking Institute (SBI) “Summer Bootcamp” at Ohio Dominican University before heading to their summer internship at an Ohio community bank. The student interns traveled to Columbus and were greeted by past SBI participants to listen to first-hand accounts of how the Ohio Bankers Leagues provides emerging professionals with training and development opportunities in the banking industry. More importantly, how SBI prepared them for their future career.
Students from ten participating universities and colleges cultivated a strong bond and heard presentations on topics facilitated by industry professionals. Sessions were led by Union Savings Bank, Civista Bank, JP Morgan Chase, and the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions, just to name a few. Students learned soft skills centered on workplace success, in-depth knowledge of industry regulations and how their role will not only support the host bank, but the communities they serve.
Students also had a chance to volunteer at Lifecare Alliance, providing them an opportunity to understand the “community” part of banking. This came as part of a new course focused on service, giving time instead of money to those in their community. During their time at Lifecare Ae, students packaged meals, supported animal care and created greeting cards for those in need.
This week, students will begin their internship experience with their host bank (full list below). SBI will continue throughout the summer with the OBL’s Kimberley Mason, Higher Education Partnership Manager, checking in with interns and their host banks throughout that time. Without the support of the host banks willing to take interns for the summer, this program would not be possible. Thank you for your commitment to empowering young, diverse professionals to become a part of the banking industry! A special thank you goes out to Union Savings Bank and Guardian Savings Bank for their consistent commitment to SBI since its inception. OBL would also like to thank the colleges and universities that send their best and brightest to be a part of this one of a kind program (full list below).
